Carbondale Travel Guide

Carbondale is located in the south of Illinois. It is a good base for exploring the Shawnee National Forest and home to Southern Illinois University.

As a university city it offers plenty of cultural activities. Nice things to do, include a stroll in the well-groomed historic neighborhoods or a lazy afternoon in one of the beautiful parks and gardens. Carbondale's nostalgic downtown, focuses on the community's railroad heritage and features a restored passenger depot, train cars, a downtown park and a unique historic pavilion. While the community has strong link to history, its heritage is best known through Woodlawn Cemetery, the probable location of the Nation's first Memorial Day observance.
