The United States was founded on July 4, 1776, when the United States colonies signed the Declaration of Independence. 

In 1777, the United States of America was established as a confederal republic. 

In 1787, the United States of America was organized under a federal republic. 

In 1789, George Washington was elected as the first President of the United States. 

From 1812-1814, the United States and Great Britian went to war.  (The War of 1812).  The British and Americans signed the Treaty of Ghent in 1814, but the Battle of New Orleans occured after the treaty was signed, when General Andrew Jackson defeated the British forces, securing America as an independent republic.
