Budget Travel Ideas in Honolulu

For those living in the paradise that is Honolulu, the phrase "the cost of paradise" is pretty common. Living in Hawaii can be pretty expensive because of the limited space to live and the added shipping costs that most goods include in its price. However, visitors to Hawaii should be aware of some tips to make their stay in Honolulu enjoyable without breaking the bank.

What to Do

Spend a day at Ala Moana Beach Park and Magic Island. Located nearby Waikiki beach, just pass of the Hilton Hawaiian Village, the Ala Moana Beach Park and Magic Island are among the favorite places for locals to spend a family day. Calm, protected waters make both beaches excellent for young children and for athletes swimming open ocean laps. There are plenty of paved ways for walking, jogging and running. The paved walkway around Magic Island is 0.5 miles, while the paved walkway around Ala Moana Beach Park is about 1.75 miles. These parks also have other amenities such as tennis courts and 2 fitness activity courses. Remember to wear sunscreen lotion and have plenty of water available.

Visit Hawaii Kai on the Eastern side of Oahu, dotted with several beach parks where is not unusual to find Japanese newlyweds getting their wedding photographs taken. There are plenty of lines from The Bus that go there ($2 for each way with one free transfer within 2 hours). A great beach to visit is the Sandy Beach Park at 8800 Kalanianaole Highway, known by the locals as Sandy's. Sandy's is a great beach to have a picnic, and watch adventurous surfers and bodyboarders. Beware the waters as the surf is very rough.

Where to Stay

For those on a tight budget, a great choice is the Waikiki Beachside Hostel on 2556 Lemon Road with rates starting at $26 and good location, right on Waikiki. Another hostel choice is the Aloha Inns at the Plumeria, nearby from Waikiki Beach on Piikoi Street, between King and Beretannia Streets.

Young couples and families with children should find the Aqua Hotel and Resorts chain a comfortable choice because it has 12 locations around Waikiki. Most of the Aqua Hotel and Resorts offer a complimentary buffet style continental breakfast and some form of discounts on advance room reservations online.

Where to Eat

Your best bet is Zippy's. Often cited as "Hawaii's favorite restaurant, Zippy's is a chain of restaurants that offers long hours of operation, cheap prices and generous portions. Make sure to try Zippy's Chili, it's amazing! Also inside most Zippy's locations is a Napoleon's Bakery, where you can find a delicious variety of affordable baked goods.
