Endless bowls of food at Wilkes Boarding House

Joseph Hollick

While in Savannah, I hope you get hungry because you will have the opportunity to experience an abundance of various cuisines and settings some of which include the gourmet fare served amid the brickwork and wooden beams of what used to be a cotton warehouse on River Street, a Southern-style cookery placed before you on an elegantly set table that’s part of the ambience of a Victorian mansion or an Eighteenth century house, and hearty food inspired by the chefs of other lands and relished in the open air of a café in City Market.   And of course who could   visit Savannah without experiencing a taste of the city’s specialty, the delicious seafood, which will be brought to you fresh and in a variety of surroundings such as in upscale restaurants with views of the river or ocean, offbeat bistros within hearing distance of the surf or within sight of the birds skimming over the marsh, and even fish camp-style eateries where you dig into piles of shrimp and crab and toss the leftovers into a hole cut in the middle of your table.   And while you are here, do not miss the chance to sample some of Savannah ’s favorite regional fare:   red rice, deviled crab, and Low country boil.   Lastly, do not forget to try the trifle, a scrumptious dessert whose origins date back to the Colonial times.
