Hiawassee GA Travel Guide
Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and seeHiawassee, aside from being a lovely town, features interesting attractions. The Georgia Mountain Fair comes to town in the summer and a 10-day fall festival is at the fairgrounds in October. Anderson Music Hall, also on the fairgrounds, is the venue for concerts year-round. Downtown Hiawassee is populated by local shops and stores.
Dining is a pleasant surprise in Hiawassee. The town boasts several good local restaurants offering many different cuisines. We got a great steak at Daniel's Family Steakhouse. The Rose is a sports bar, Asiana features Chinese and Thai cuisine, and Hawg Heaven has great barbecue. A couple of restaurants even feature gourmet cuisine on their menus at surprisingly low prices.
There are numerous day trips from Hiawassee. One must-see excursion is to Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia. At 4,784 feet above sea level, the weather on top is usually much cooler than the valley. About two-thirds of the way up, visitors can park and visit the gift shop. Shuttles will take guests to the very top, or people can hike the last half-mile. A visitors center sits atop the mountain and guests can see exhibits about the area's natural and cultural history, and also view a film about the mountain itself. On a clear day, visitors can see four states from the mountaintop, and the view is spectacular. The park is open Memorial Day through October, and on weekends in the spring and late fall, weather permitting.
