Senior Travel in Florida

Edit This

Florida and senior travel seem to go hand and hand. It's the perfect location to escape harsh winter weather or to simply enjoy the relaxing pace of the Florida lifestyle.

Best City for Senior Attractions

The west-coast Florida city of St. Petersburg is a great place for vacationing seniors because there is an immense amount of attractions and activities suited for older travelers. Touring the large selection of museums in St. Petersburg, such as the Salvador Dali Museum, is a wonderful way for seniors to spend the day. Another stand-out attraction for seniors is the Fort DeSoto Park. The park has several miles of white sandy beaches, which aren't packed full of noisy beach-goers. Seniors can enjoy the calm of the ocean crashing onto the shore. Boating and fishing are also favorites here. Fort DeSoto Park is home to some fabulous nature trails as well. Indigenous birds and plants can be admired along with the historical mortar battery on the park. Seniors can also enjoy The Pier in St. Petersburg. It has unique shopping and restaurants on the waterfront.

Accommodations

Florida hotels are notorious for offering great discounts for seniors. Even budget hotels have additional saving perks for older travelers. Up to 10% off nightly reservations can be saved with senior discounts. The Wingate Inn located in Tampa is a great example of a hotel aimed towards seniors. A 10% discount is available for travelers over 60 years of age. Amenities at the pet-friendly hotel include a large continental breakfast, daily newspaper and kitchenettes in suites. The atmosphere at the Wingate Inn is relaxing and quiet. The Boca Raton Plaza also offers senior discounts and an easing environment, which is perfect for travelers who want to have a quiet vacation in Florida. Senior travel should also include other accommodation like vacation homes. Seniors can have the privacy of a home and temporary aspect of a hotel.

Areas to Avoid

Senior travelers should probably avoid areas that initially attract young, single travelers. These locations tend to have more nightclub activities and less attractions. Areas like Miami and Pensacola are widely populated by young adult travelers. Summer and spring break are most certainly times to avoid these Florida cities. Also, places such as Gainesville that are college towns might not be the best options for senior travelers. These locations will be louder and, with the exception of sporting events, will be void of senior attractions.

A great vacation spot to find senior attractions and hotels with great discounts for older travelers is Florida. Senior travel finds its ideal match with the sunny state.
