Key Largo Travel Guide

Key Largo is the first key in the Florida Keys. It is chock full of things to see and do and makes a great vacation area for a family or for anyone.

Spiegel Grove

Key Largo has the world’s largest artificial reef, the John Pennekamp Coral Reef in Spiegel Grove, so it is a great destination for those who love to snorkel or dive. It is also a great place for fishermen to frequent as well as those who enjoy water sports or just laying on the beach. 

Hotels

There are many different hotels in which to stay. There are major chain hotels and resorts and then there are the smaller family owned hotels. There are also condominiums to rent and even some campgrounds.

Dining

Restaurants are plentiful and you can find sophisticated fare all the way to street food. Sea food is plentiful as is ethnic food. 

Diving and Snorkeling

This is dive and snorkel heaven. You can find many different places to rent equipment or people to direct charters. John Pennekamp Coral Reef Park was founded in 1960 and has been protected since them. You can find so many species of tropical fish that are so friendly you will never want to dive anywhere else. In the Elbow you can find several historic shipwrecks including the City of Washington. Key Largo Dry Rocks has the famous statue “Christ of the Deep”. North Dry Rocks is shallow and has Minnow Cave where you can see hundreds of silver minnows. French Creek as coral caves and tunnels and Molasses Reef goes up to the surface and dives down to 50 feet. 

Water Activities

If you don’t want to go under water but still want to see the sea life take a ride in the Glass bottom boat at John Pennekamp Coral Reef park. The Spirit of Pennekamp holds 130 passengers and the trip lasts 2.5 hours and costs around $25. Nearby is Key Largo Beach where you can while the day away in the sun. 

Everglades National Park

Of course Everglades National Park is right next door to Key Largo. This is the largest subtropical wilderness park in the U.S. and has all kinds of birds, animals, reptiles, and fish. You can pick from all kinds of guided tours which is advised because you will have a tour guide to show you all the nooks and crannies of the park and also keep you safe. 

Key Largo is a great place for active people to vacation. The water sports and other activities will keep you going for days and days.
