Idaho Springs is the first community you encounter as you drive west from Denver on Interstate 70 into the Colorado high country.

Indian trader George Jackson found gold along Chicago Creek in 1859 and the community subsequently developed as a health resort because the supposed curative powers of its hot springs. You can still soak in the hot waters of Indian Hot Springs.

Scenes for the 2005 movie "Silver City" were filmed in Idaho Springs.

The population is estimated at 1,880.

Since July, 1950, Idaho Springs has been home to a larger-than-life statue of comic strip hero/aviator Steve Canyon, hewn from Indiana limestone. The statue is intended to honor all of the various cartoon characters that went to war for the U.S. in World War II. You can find it at the corner of Colorado Blvd. and Miner St.
