Fairplay Travel Guide
Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and seeThe seat of Park County, Fairplay has an estimated population of 700.
Situated a short distance southeast of Breckenridge, over Hoosier Pass, Fairplay is on the verge of a development boom as investors, retirees and businesspeople look for reasonably priced land within easy driving distance of the obscenely expensive and upscale Breckenridge area.
Fairplay got its first real supermarket in 2005 and boasts several restaurants, two hotels and a couple of motels. The Hand Hotel on historic Front Street has a reputation for being haunted, if that sort of thing interests you. Front Street is lined with trendy shops and eateries. Among the more interesting is the Colorado Mountain Hat Co., where employees use a 150-year-old phrenology device to get precise measurements of your head for a custom made cowboy hat that's a perfect fit.
Fairplay is also the home of the South Park City historical museum town, a recreation of a 19th century Colorado high country miniing community.
And if you're looking for the community that inspired the popular animated TV series South Park, Fairplay is it.
Among the restaurant choices is the Brown Burro, a Mexican restaurant with reasonable prices and excellent huevos rancheros.
The local weekly newspaper, The Flume, is a folksy, opinionated publication useful more as entertainment than as a news source.
Fairplay has a strict radar-controlled speed limit on Hwy. 9 through the middle of town.
