Alturas contains the Modoc County Historical Museum and a turn-of-the-century jailhouse. Lakes and campsites can be found in the surrounding countryside. Drive through the sagebrush-covered hills of Modoc National Wildlife Refuge to spot waterfowl, pronghorn antelope, and deer. Watch for bighorn sheep, mule deer, and antelope in the South Warner Wilderness Area.
