Edit ThisGetting a hotel room in Santa Monica is a great choice when visiting the Los Angeles area. Santa Monica's proximity to the 10 and 405 freeways means travelers can get more places in the city with minimum strife. Santa Monica itself has enough attractions to merit a day or two of touring, as well. There are three major areas in Santa Monica worth setting up base camp near:
3rd Street Promenade
Just blocks from the beach, the Promenade and the surrounding area is the most tourism-driven portion of Santa Monica. Shops along the Promenade resemble a high-end mall, and the Santa Monica Pier, with its trademark Ferris wheel, is a stone's throw away. Be prepared to pay top dollar for rooms here, though, as the price goes hand-in-hand with the ocean view. If the thought of $200 per night and up hotel stays makes you queasy, consider the nearby HI-Los Angeles Hostel, near 2nd Street and Broadway. Most of the hotels are concentrated on the aptly-named Ocean Avenue with views of the Pacific Ocean picturesque enough to have been a favorite of filmmakers and television show producers for years.
Main Street
A quieter section of town, just a mile or two south of the Promenade, Main Street features some of Santa Monica's nicest restaurants, most interesting bars, and is walking distance from the beach. The Sea Shore Motel is about your only option on Main Street itself (and is one of the more affordable hotels in the city, at around $125 for a room). Being in close proximity to the area is a good idea for those who prefer to see sights on foot.
Montana Avenue
A bit inland, this stretch of stores is home to some very interesting boutiques where clothing, beauty products or anything else can be bought and sold. It's also home to Father's Office, a gastro-pub with possibly the best hamburger in the southland. There are no hotels along the Avenue, but hotels along Wilshire Boulevard. just to the south provide easy access to the laid-back shopping and dining on Montana.
