The San Gorgonio Wilderness is the climax region of the San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California. Located on the San Bernardino National Forest approximately 25 miles east of San Bernardino, the Wilderness receives approximately 200,000 visitors per year. Its 58,969 acres harbor two small lakes, meadows, streams, 100 miles of trail, densely forested northern slopes, and rugged terrain. Elevations range from 4,400 feet to 11,499 atop namesake Mt. Silverwood Lake

Lake Silverwood is located just 30 miles from the city of San Bernadino. This beautiful 2400 acre recreation area is at an altitude of 3380 feet. The surface area of the lake is 980 acres with 13 miles of shoreline.

Trout are routinely stocked by the California Department of Fish and Game . The lake also has a significant stripped bass population along with catfish, large mouth bass and crappie. Striped Bass have been caught weighing over 50 pounds.

In 1929 construction began on what was then the largest ski jump in the world with hopes of luring the 1932 Winter Olympic Games. (Los Angeles had already won the rights to the summer games.) The structure took two years to build, and in 1931, just three weeks after it was completed, Norwegian-born Alf Engen set a new world record by jumping an incredible 243 feet. Route 66 Rendezvous Festival

The first Rendezvous took place in 1990 at Glen Helen Regional Park in Devore with 300 vehicles and about 4,000 spectators enjoying the cars. A cruise down “E” Street and a concert were highlights of that first event.

In 1991, the event moved to the National Orange Show grounds and expanded with the help of the Over the Hill Gang.

The Rendezvous moved to the heart of downtown San Bernardino in 1992. That year, more than 700 vehicles filled the streets in celebration of the 66 th anniversary of Route 66 “The Mother Road.”

Asistencia

Established as an adjunct to Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, the Asistencia is often said to be part of a second, inland chain of missions. At the site is a museum, small chapel, and gatehouse

The current site was built in 1830 but was looted by attacking Indians in 1834; some Indian neophytes were also killed there that year. This basically was the end of the asistencia and it quickly passed into private hands. José de Carmen Lugo purchased the property in 1842.
