When to Go in Puerto Vallarta

Edit This
Puerto Vallarta’s weather is sunny all year, making it a premier destination. With temperatures ranging from upper 70s to low 90s, it's a great place to escape the winter in colder regions, and is a picturesque summer vacation spot.

Puerto Vallarta Weather

The high tourist season runs from November through April, where temperatures range from 75 to 85 degrees. In the off-season, May through October, temperatures swell and it's much more humid, with typical days ranging from the high 80s to low 90s, but with a stifling 95% humidity. If you don’t mind the heat and rain, you'll find decreased prices and smaller crowds during these months, with the exception of July and August when many Mexicans take holidays throughout the country.

Rainy season in Puerto Vallarta begins in June and continues through to early October, and is characterized by afternoon showers and infrequent thunderstorms. Though not as pleasant as the cooler winter months, the storms and rains do tend to cool the air, to make for great nighttime sleeping.

Puerto Vallarta Festivals & Events

Visiting Puerto Vallarta during a festival is a great idea to really soak in some of the local and regional culture. All Souls Day and the Day of Dead, November 1 and 2, can provide an interesting look into the memorial practices of Mexicans. New Years Eve is a vibrant and lively holiday celebration characterized by fiestas held throughout the city.

Other notable holidays that are especially good to visit Puerto Vallarta include Carnaval Day, on March 23, when there are numerous parties and parades throughout the city, and Independence Eve and Day, September 15 and 16, which is celebrated with magnificent fireworks and parades throughout the city.

Puerto Vallarta features monthly art gallery crawls that are also great to attend. Taking place from October through April, more than 20 of the top galleries open their doors to art lovers, with many serving drinks. Featuring many of Mexico’s best up-and-coming artists, this is a great event to plan a trip around.

Prices in Puerto Vallarta fluctuate heavily throughout the year, with the peak season prices costing 30% to 50% more than the off season, for everything from hotels to food to transportation. If you're traveling during the peak tourist season, be sure to book accommodations well in advance, as many places fill to capacity early.
