Practical Information in Puerto VallartaEdit This
Tourists began to flock to Puerto Vallarta in the late 19th century due to its white sand beaches and tropical climate. This still rings true today as Puerto Vallarta has become one of the most luxurious vacation hotspots in all of Mexico.
Location - Puerto Vallarta is situated on the Pacific Ocean, on a narrow coastal plain at the foot of the Sierres Cuale and San Sebastian in Mexico. The town of Puerto Vallarta sits on the recess of one of the Pacific Ocean's largest, deepest bays, the Bay of Banderas. The city seems to be divided into two sections, one being the new town along the hotel strip and the northern beaches, and the other is considered the old town located near the jungle hills on the sides of the Rio Cuale.
Telephone - To access a number outside of Mexico you will need to dial 00 and the country code of the country in which you are calling, then the area code (omitting the zero), followed by the number. For calls into Mexico, the country code is 52. The area codes in Puerto Vallarta and the North Shore are 322 and 329. For local calls to landlines the number consists of seven digits and the area code does not need to be included. When dialing a cell phone from a local landline, you must dial 044 + area code + seven digits. In case of emergency dial the general number 060 (similar to dialing 911 in the United States).
Currency - Mexico's currency is the Mexican Peso ($), to distinguish from the American Dollar ($) the Mexican currency symbol is seen as MX$ or sometimes $100 MN. US dollars are also widely accepted. ATMs (cashpoints) machines can be found throughout Puerto Vallarta. Major credit cards, and traveler's checks are widely accepted at most hotels, and established restaurants and retail shops. While traveling in Mexico it is advisable to carry some cash when shopping, as street vendors, and most markets only accept cash. Never accept help from strangers when trying to withdrawal cash from a local ATM.
Language - Spanish is the native language, but English is also widely spoken.
Time -Banderas Bay is divided in the middle by two states: Jalisco (Puerto Vallarta is located here) and Nayarit (Nuevo Vallarta north). There is a one hour time difference between the two states, this can be confusing when traveling between the two areas and making reservations. Puerto Vallarta is Central Time Zone or GMT -7, and Nuevo Vallarta is Pacific Time Zone or GMT -8.
