Playa del Carmen is the fastest growing coastal town in Mexico. What was once a tiny little fishing village has now blossomed into the heartbeat of the Mayan Riviera. 

Location - Playa del Carmen is 35 miles south of Cancun, Mexico on the Yucatan Peninsula, in the heart of the Mayan Riviera. The town is located on the Caribbean Sea, off of Highway 307.

Telephone - For all non local calls (long distance calling) in Mexico you will need to dial 01, followed by the area code (for Playa del Carmen the area code is 984), and then the telephone number. To access a number outside of Mexico you will need to dial 00 and the country code of the country in which you are calling, then the area code (omitting the zero), followed by the number. Mexico's country code is 52. For a police emergency the number to dial is 18.39.54, for a fire emergency dial 14.20.50, and for a medical emergency dial 15.20.55.

Currency - Mexico's currency is the Mexican Peso ($), to distinguish from the American Dollar ($) the Mexican currency symbol is seen as MX$ or sometimes $100 MN. There is one hundred cents to every peso. The US dollar is also widely accepted. Most ATMs (cashpoints) in Playa del Carmen are found on Avenida 5. If you need to exchange currency or cash in traveler's checks stop by the Casas de Cambio during business hours. Major credit cards, and traveler's checks are widely accepted at most hotels, and established restaurants and retail shops. While traveling in Mexico it is advisable to carry some cash when shopping, as street vendors, and most markets only accept cash.

Weather - Playa del Carmen has one of those ideal climates, which makes a visit at any time of the year a tropical one. However, there is a rainy season (October to January & April to July), and the summers do tend to get pretty hot! During the rainy season it can rain every day, and there is a chance of hurricanes in the Yucatan. The least crowded time to visit is usually the month of September, when the children are back to school, and right before rainy season.

Language - Spanish is the native language, but English is also widely spoken.

Population - According the 2005 Census, it was estimated that Playa del Carmen had a population of 100,383, but number has been rapidly growing since.
