Getting There in Playa del Carmen

Edit This
Airport and Buses

If you're planning a trip to Playa del Carmen, getting there is pretty straightforward. All major airlines fly into Cancun International Airport, which is 45 minutes away from Playa del Carmen. From Cancun, you can take a direct bus to Playa del Carmen. The bus line is called the Riviera. You can catch it outside the airport terminal, and cost of a ticket is about $7 USD.

Colectivo

For about $16 dollars, you can take a “colectivo.” It's a van that fits 10 people and makes stops at major hotels. Tickets can be purchased at kiosks outside the airport. The downside to this plan is the wait: you have to allow passengers to gather before leaving, and the drop-offs can take a while. Considering that the ride itself is 45 minutes long, this may not be your top choice.

Taxis

If you prefer to take a taxi, be ready to shell out a bundle of cash; the fare is approximately $65 dollars. To avoid heat and lines, you may want to make a reservation with a car service through companies like Resorthoppa. Expect a similar rate.

Cozumel Ferry

Flying to the island of Cozumel is also an option. If you opt to go this route, you will have to take a ferry to Playa del Carmen. The ferries depart from the main pier every hour or so during the morning.

Tip for Drivers

Highway 307 goes through Playa del Carmen. No matter what city you are coming from, this will be the last leg of your trip.
