Beaches in Playa del Carmen

Edit This
Just 68 kilometers (42 miles) south from Cancun, Playa del Carmen is a short bus ride away. You could even negotiate a good fare with a taxi driver of Cancun to drive you to Playa del Carmen. In Mexico, the options are limitless! Once in Playa del Carmen, you will have a lot of beaches to choose from. Here's a review of the beaches that you don't want to miss!

The Mexican government is pushing this beach hard for domestic travelers by providing subsidies for local visitors, because most hotels and resorts in the area are owned by European entrepreneurs. The influx of European funds has allowed this beach area to bloom into one of the most amazing aquariums in the world. The calm surf and clear water allow Xel-ha visitors to enjoy one of the best snorkeling and scuba diving experiences in the world. However, this beach is also great for those looking just for some well deserved R&R or sunbathing. Xel-Ha is also known for its archaeological sights and mysterious caverns.

Taj Majal

Taj Majal is a beautiful site for scuba diving. With a name like that, you know that the coral reef formations will look as if they were made out of pure marble. This beach offers great conditions for a safe scuba diving expedition for both beginners and advanced divers. When visiting Taj Majal, locals will refer to it as a cenote , which is Mayan for natural formed wells. Other great examples of must see cenotes are La Ponderosa, Dos Ojos and El Gran Cenote.

If you're visiting Playa del Carmen, locals will surely encourage to make the 45 minute drive to Tulum for a very simple reason: it's amazing! Tulum maintains the atmosphere of a secluded beach colony where only those in the "in crowd" stay. The beaches of Tulum are peppered with amazing hotels all around that all have prime locations at the beach front. The best part about Tulum is that all of these hotels offer affordable prices. Please be aware, if you're traveling with kids, that some areas are bathing suit optional. Tulum also offers beautiful archaeological Mayan sites, which are the only ones built so close to the sea.

Even before the start of the Mayan empire, Xcaret has played an important role in history. Xcaret is one the most well known eco archaeological parks in the world where you will find a wide variety of man made and natural formations that will take your breath away. There are over 53 different types of activities that the Secretaria de Turismo de Mexico (Ministry of Tourism of Mexico) recommends in Xcaret. At Xcaret you will encounter several natural habitats that specialize in the conservation of specific endangered species such as bats, turtles and fish.
