Senior Travel
Edit ThisCozumel is a spectacular montage of tropical forests, ancient ruins, museums and a rich ocean ecology. The island is one of the 5 best diving centers in the world that is equally entertaining for non-divers with its Caribbean azure waters and water sports. Here is a guide to help senior travelers enjoy the beauty of Cozumel.
Museo de la Isla Cozumel
The Museo de Isla Cozumel, located at calles 4-6, is more interactive and interesting than your average museum. On the first level, there are nice exhibits sketching the region’s endangered species and comprehensive information on the island's striking coral formations, topography and ecology. Level 2 is dedicated to the cultural history of the land, its artifacts, pre-Hispanic ruins and colonial era weapons. There are hosts of other memorabilia but what really sets Museo de la Isla apart is its fascinating nuggets of information and well-organized collections. There is a pleasant rooftop restaurant, where you can enjoy lunch in the backdrop of a picturesque setting. The museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. except Sundays when it closes at 4 p.m. Admission fee is $3.
Maya Ruins
Hire a taxi ($30) and a guide ($20) and take off for the mystical Maya Ruins, an ancient attraction whose beauty lies more in the journey than the actual destination. The location of the ruins housed an erstwhile ceremonial center and a worshiping ground for the goddess of women and childbirth--Ixchel. The ruins aren’t extraordinarily fancy, but give you a good sense of the ancient heritage and mythology of Cozumel and make for a nice trip through the countryside. Entry fee is $6 and there is tiny shack at the entrance that sells aerated drinks and light snacks.
Horseback Tour
Senior visitors may want to take a horseback tour to explore the beauty of the island. The most attractive trips are offered by Rancho Palmitas along the Costera highway. Alternatively, you can also take a 4-hour tour of Cozumel by a hired car, which costs approximately $50.
Special Tours
Special seniors tours and tours for those with limited mobility are offered that provide more relaxed and less stressful sightseeing, easily accessible beaches and moderate activity and adventure to help the senior travelers enjoy the charm of Cozumel at a more leisurely pace. There are also special deep-sea fishing tours that can be taken by the more adventure-seeking tourists.
Cozumel is a senior-friendly island retreat that has a good mix of relaxed sightseeing, water sports, sea excursions and fishing tours.
