accommodation in Narsarsuaq

Edit This

It’s probably not so surprising that accommodations in Narsarsuaq are rather limited. The town in Southern Greenland is tiny and breathtakingly beautiful, but most of all, it’s remote. There are only two hotels, three hostels, and some cabin rentals. There is one other very unique option for your stay in Narsarsuaq as well. Various sheep farmers who live in the area provide accommodations for tourists in their old houses. This is a highly recommended way to get a more intimate perspective on how day to day life is in Greenland.

Hotels

The hotels may seem quite pricey at first, but when you consider all of the amenities, luxuries, and activities they provide in such an isolated area, the prices don’t seem all that bad. Hotel Narsarsuaq is a very relaxing hotel. It’s open all year long and features a sauna, a solarium, billiards, a fitness room, Wi-Fi, money exchange from U.S. Dollars to Danish Crowns, and a gift shop for if you’d like a souvenir or if you simply forgot something from home. It is about 7 km from the ice cap and is close to the iceberg-filled fjord. In the winter, the Northern Lights make the night sky an incredible sight to behold.

Prices range from a shared dormitory bed, at DKK 310 or around $59 USD, to a double Junior Suite at about $315 USD per night. Breakfast is included in all rooms.

The other hotel is the Discobay Hotel; it offers views of the iceberg filled fjord and Disko Bay. From July to October, you may even see whales from the large terrace. A restaurant, cafeteria, discotheque, and conference room are the main features of the hotel. A single room is DKK 850, or $162 USD, while a double room is about $220 USD. It also offers short or long term cabin rentals, breakfast, and fishing, botanical, kayak, and snowmobile excursions.

Hostels

Hostels are cheaper more rustic options, if that’s what you’re looking for. Although less expensive than hotels, they are still highly priced for what they are in comparison to hostels in other parts of the world. The Leif Eriksson Hostel costs $43 USD for an adult, breakfast and dinner cost extra (breakfast is $7 while dinner is almost $30!). Tent accommodations are available for even less, about $23. Trekking and kayaking trips can be booked from this hostel. Other options include the Narsarsuaq Youth Hostel and the Igaliku Cabins and Hostel, both owned by Blue Ice.
