George C. Reifel Bird Sanctuary
Edit This
The Reifel Sanctuary is one of British Columbia's best locations for viewing waterfowl, plus it is an important migratory stopover and wintering area. Over 230 species have been observed at the sanctuary. The refuge is located six miles west of Ladner on Westham Island (roughly a 40 minute drive from downtown Vancouver). Access is by vehicle or bike. A good selection of birds is reported for most months of the year, although July and August are considered "quiet months" at the refuge. The refuge is situated in an estuarine marsh, with trails on dykes and through woods. All of the trails are flat, with no elevation changes to work up a sweat. The sanctuary is open from 9 am to 4 pm each day. For additional information, call the refuge at (604) 946-6980.
