Burnaby Travel Guide

Burnaby lies just east of Vancouver, bordered by the Burrard Inlet from the north, Burnaby Mtn. from the east, and the Fraser River from the south. It is probably Vancouver's loveliest suburb, with a few pretty hills like Capitol Hill and Burnaby Heigths, and a chain of small lakes - Deer Lake, Squint Lake and Burnaby Lake (rowing competitions are held there). 

North Burnaby has a large Italian community which is evident when taking a stroll along East Hastings, in the Heights shopping district. Burnaby has some industry in the Central Valley, a few Hollywood production studios (MGM with its roaring lion at Boundary and Henning), and the largest shopping mall in Greater Vancouver - Metrotown Centre, with over 200 shops under one roof. We also have our own academic reply to UBC - Simon Fraser University (known as SFU) on top of Burnaby Mtn, established in the mid-60s. 

For panoramic views of Vancouver, the North Shore Mountains, Indian Arm, Belcarra, Port Moody and as far as Vancouver Island, go to a viewpoint on Burnaby Mtn (make a left on Centennial Way when going up to SFU). It's definitely worth it. Make sure the sky is not overcast and come closer to sunset time. Sunsets can be out of this world, if there's no rain!
