In the late 1800's Pheonix Mountain was the site of a busy copper mine and a bustling town of over 4000 people. The Granby Smelter was the largest in North America until it closed in 1919. The town didn't collapse though, as it had been settled by the Doukhobors escaping persecution in Russia in 1909. Much of the Russian heritage can still be found in the many restaurants still serving borscht, perogies and pyrahi.
