Sights

Shanghai's dualistic character is a fact. On the one hand, it is a metropolis and the number-one commercial centre of China. On the other hand, you can still trace historical links and aspects of traditional living. Walk along the Huangpu river and breathe in the 'Bund's' atmosphere, the old street where old and new gather. South of the Bund, you will find the Old Chinese City, the heart of modern Shanghai. Dazzling streets, loads of tiny restaurants, street markets, gardens and parks, temples, memorial sites and museums.... Don't even think that you can do Shanghai in one simple day.

Yu Garden (Yuyuan), a classical garden south of the Yangtze with a history of over 400 years, created in the mid-16th century, towards the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). There are more than 40 scenic spots in the garden ingeniously partitoned, where the halls, chambers, towers and pavilions, rockeries and flowing streams all express the essence of the Ming and Qing Dynasty garden architecture of the South.

The Bund
The Bund

The Bund, an Anglo-Indian term for the embankment of a muddy waterfront, facing the river with its magnificent collection of European and Japanese colonial architecture, runs along the Huangpu River and there are plenty of street performers, peddlers and food. The Bund is most spectacular with one side of the boulevard lined up with buildings of "Old-fashioned American big city" style. These used to house banks, trading houses and exclusive clubs. Look at the grandeur of the Bank of China and the Greek columns of the Customs House.

Oriental Pearl TV Tower

photo

For many visitors to Shanghai, the best thing is to go up Pudong's Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the new symbol of Shanghai. When the night is coming, under the reflection of multi-colored lamps, the slim and graceful demeanor is more fascinating. The 11 steel structured round balls are just like 11 shining pearls embedded on the body of the tower, form poetic conception of big and small pearls dropping down on the Jade disc.

Guhua Park

Edit This

Guhua Park, is a delightful, well-planned park on the outskirts of Shanghai in Nanqiao Town. The best part of the park is "San Nu Temple", which is a tribute to the three daughters of the King of Wu who during the Zhou Dynasty hanged themselves in the north Nanqiao Town of Fengxian in order to avoid being caught by the soldiers of Yue. It is a peaceful and worthwhile daytrip.

Take the subway to Xinzhuang station and catch a public bus from the southern side (about 1 hour).
