Things to do
Edit ThisNear San Ignacio there are two places you can visit easily and rapidly: the Cerro Campano and the murals of Faical.
In San Ignacio itself you can see some very old paintings in the church. The nightlife is pretty decent for such a small town, but mostly only in the weekends. As San Ignacio is a coffee capital you should pay a visit to a local coffee roaster, such as Cafenor.

Industrias Cafenor
Edit ThisA certain pride is in place

Just a city block away from the Plaza de Armas you can find Cafenor. Gonzalo Pesantes Peña's company offers high quality locally produced coffee and alcoholic drinks.
About 60 percent of the agricultural produce of this isolated province is coffee, as this is a more easily exportable product than fruits and vegetables. The horrible quality of the roads means that even the coastal market is only reachable for a product that doesn't rot easily. Lack of capital entails that the raw material is exported.
Cafenor tries to industrialize the products locally more..

Cerro Campano
Edit ThisPineapples waiting for hungry tourists

Overlooking San Ignacio is the Cerro or Mirador Turistico Campano. At an altitude of about 1800 meters you can basicly see the whole province.
Armin Garcia is making a living on this peak. He's got a small place to eat, a store, a playground and some tropical shelters from the sun and the rain. He makes a living with his store, his pinetrees and his little pineapple plantation. Recently, a few very basic but pretty cabañas were installed on the mountain top (20 soles per cabin).
You can take any old mototaxi to bring you to the Cerro for 10 soles. To more..

A twenty minute drive from San Ignacio on a scenic and decent dirt road you can find the ancient murals of Faical. Very little is known about this prehistoric graffitti, as passing archeologists dated them to 1800 to 5000 years old. Either way they are fascinating. It's another 'visit it before it disapears' attraction, as the cutting down of the forest about 25 years ago meant the sun started bleaching the ink. As noone seems to be willing to have the decency to protect them from the sun, some people think they might disapear altogether withen the next 10 to 15 more..
