San Ignacio Travel Guide
Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and seeSan Ignacio city is a small but attractive town. As the capital of the northernmost province of Cajamarca , it is a likely stopover on the road to or from Ecuador via Zumba and Vilcabamba. A lot of people just pass by, but it's a good place to spend a day, or even two.
The city itself is pretty, not just because of its spectacular setting, but also because of the details that show the sense of taste and the energy of its population. Streets with little benches on both sides, steep streets with lots of trees and a central stair, a Plaza de Armas that's fascinating to say the least.
The province depends for a huge share of its income on coffee. In town some people are trying to increase margins by processing the product in their own little factories, making it an excellent place to have a cup. Industrias Cafenor is a good example of this, not only producing a good coffee, but also different types of tasty coffee based liquors. But talking to the town folks you will meet several people who produce their own coffee. Combining the best of both worlds, there’s a relatively lively nightlife, and no crime to speak of. Due to its altitude of 1200 meters it has a reasonable climate. Hotels are a bit pricy though, at 35 soles for a decent two person room. If you’ve got a tent you could camp for free on the Cerro Campano, a peak overlooking town. There is a small restaurant, a little shop and an incredible view over the whole province.Contributors
