The City of Wakefield is on the bank of the River Calder in West Yorkshire, England. In Medieval times, it was referred to as The Merrie City. Nowadays, it holds two major festivals each year. The Clarence Park Festival presents musical performances by a number of popular groups at no charge to attendees, while the annual Rhubarb Festival pays homage to that locally-grown plant with a series of tours, lectures, exhibits and food stalls. The Wakefield Cathedral Choir, which has sung to great acclaim on BBC radio and television programs, presents public recitals and concerts at the cathedral, as well as performing regularly at church services. Among the city’s tourist attractions are The National Coal Mining Museum, the Wakefield Theatre Royal, and the marvelous Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Sports fans can watch cricket and rugby, while those with a desire to participate personally in active pursuits can enjoy the water sports available at Pugneys Country Park, or take a walk through its nature preserve, or ride around the lake on its narrow-gauge miniature railway. Italian, Chinese, Indian, and Thai restaurants are available in town as is a goodly assortment of both chain and independent hotels such as the Cedar Court Hotel group that is one of the largest of the hotel chains. They have all price ranges of hotel rooms. For those on a budge they can try the Premier Inn Whitwood for 47 to 54 EU. There is even a Best Western and a Travel Lodge in the budget category.
