Senior Travel in United Kingdom
Edit ThisThere are many exciting and interesting opportunities for United Kingdom senior travel. Some people believe that once they reach a certain age that they are too old to travel as much as they used to. This cannot be further from the truth. Whether or not they choose to go alone or with a partner, seniors will find that they have a lot of travel choices.
Bus Tours
No matter which country you visit in the UK, you will find many coach tours; some lasting 1 day and some which may last as long as a week. These are perfect vacations for those who are traveling alone.
England
England has many historic attractions that appeal to just about every interest. Westminster Abbey in London is open 6 days-a-week to tourists and features the graves of many famous authors, royalty and political figures. Admission to the Abbey is £15, those confined to wheelchairs get in free as not every area is accessible.
Scotland
Scotland offers many opportunities for seniors, also. One of the must-see cities is the capital city of Edinburgh. It offers shopping, cultural events, fine dining and Edinburgh Castle. Unless a senior is very fit, it is recommended that a taxi be taken up to Edinburgh Castle as it sits on top of a very steep hill. The Edinburgh Tattoo is held here every August.
Wales
To many who visit the UK, Wales is often left out. Wales has some of the most beautiful scenery in all of the United Kingdom. A couple of yearly events that might appeal to those seniors who are planning to travel to Swansea are the Swansea Mumbles Victorian weekend in mid-June which features all things Victorian, and the Swansea Festival of Music and Art held in October.
Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is a very safe place to visit now and is becoming famous for its large number of parks and gardens. One must-see event is the 3-day Garden Show Ireland which is held at Hillsborough Castle in June.
Special for Seniors
Seniors who are visiting the United Kingdom can purchase a senior railcard which gives them a discount on train travel throughout England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. They must be over 60 years old and have a valid passport.
Most hotels offer a senior-discount, as do most travel companies. Many of the historic areas are not totally accessible to those seniors who have mobility issues; however most of the areas have some parts which are easily reached by all.
