Travel Guide in Portree
Edit ThisA quaint and charming small town overlooking a pebble beach awaits you in Portree, Scotland. The town is small, and a Portree Travel Guide will help you to discover the hidden gems in this tiny town.
Getting There
The best way to get into the city is by bus. You can catch a ride daily from Fort William, Glasgow, or Inverness. If you want to drive yourself in, take the bridge in Skye through the town of Broadford. Once you're in Portree you'll likely be walking most places as the town is quite small. However, you can rent a mountain bike or a car, if you like.
Things to See and Do
The Harbor is rather picturesque. A backdrop of lush hillside and brightly colored houses creates a vivid contrast to the gray shingle beach. This area is still the central hub of life in Portree, and worth a visit.
If you can secure tickets, an evening at the Skye Scene Highland Ceiligh is always a good time. The show features local history and lore coupled with live music and traditions. You can book the tickets in advance on the group's website, and should note that there is a modest fee to attend.
Not unlike many other small towns, Portree has an active crafts scene. You can find handmade crafts to keep as keepsakes at many locations. A favorite among tourists is a shop called "Over the Rainbow."
Taking a simple walk through the harbor and town is an activity all in it's own. From stopping at the Mercat Cross and War Memorial to taking in the stone buildings that line the streets to the Harbor, you can see things here that most of us just can't see at home. The mountains fall into the sea here, making the harbor a famous backdrop for calendar shoots. It is easy to loose yourself in the rich history and beauty of this place.
Where to Stay
Lodging in the small town takes some thought. There is a bed and breakfast operating on Staffin Road called Sidhoen Dubha. Rooms are clean and cozy and the staff prepares a full Scottish breakfast for guests in the morning. And under 30 pounds per person, it's really a steal.
There is also a hotel located in town called The Portree Independant Hostel. The building was once a post office for Portree and now features dormitory style beds and large common areas.
There is also a nearby campground.
