Inverugie Castle, June 2004

Stanley Bruce (Bard o' Buchan)

Peterhead lies on the south bank of the river Ugie and was originally called ‘Peterugie’, possibly originating from ‘Pett-air-uisge’ a Celtic-Pictish name which means a settlement near the water or Latin ‘Inverugi Petri’.   St Peter’s church was built in the 13 th century and it is more likely the name Peterhead originates from St Peter.

The name was changed to Peterhead in 1560 when the land was acquired by the Keith’s, Earls Marischal of Scotland .   Peterhead is currently looking to tourism to revitalise the town, the Glenugie Distillery may be gone but the castles at Ravenscraig and Inverugie could be potential tourist attractions, and if Historic Scotland were to get out of their lowland offices and take an interest in Buchan these castles could be saved for future generations.
