Especially during the Edinburgh festival, it might be a smart idea to book a room in advance. Although accommodation prices can run fairly high, Edinburgh has quite a wide choice of centrally located (youth) hostels.
An alternative to hostels are the numerous bed & breakfast hotels. Minto Street, to the south of the city centre, is home to many of these.
For a more generous budget, there is a wide offering of hotels throughout the city, including The Balmoral (Edinburgh's equivalent of The Ritz), The Caledonian Hilton, and most international hotel chains, such as Holiday Inn, Novotel, Hotel Ibis, and so on.

The Hilton Edinburgh Caledonian is a luxury hotel with a sandstone facade.   It was built in 1903, and features many amenities. The Scotsman Hotel once was occupied by the Scotsman Newspaper and features many luxury amenities such as a business and fitness center.   The Hilton Edinburgh Caledonian and The Scotsman Hotel are fine examples of the luxurious, historic accommodations available in Edinburgh hotels.
