Getting There in OxfordEdit This
If you’re arriving by air, you will arrive at London Heathrow Airport (LHA) www.heathrowairport.com. There are several forms of transportation from LHA to your Oxford hotel including: car, coach and taxi. All major car rental companies are available at LHA, but renting a car is not a good idea. Driving can be a total hassle, parking is even worse, and you won't fully enjoy your Oxford vacation if you're busy fighting traffic, getting lost, and engaged in a never-ending hunt for a legal parking space. Oxford is very pedestrianized and best explored on foot. So, it's best to forget the car and simply walk and/or use the city's excellent bus system (www.oxfordbus.co.uk). There are also plenty of taxi companies available once you reach Oxford. These include: ABC Taxis (+44 0 1865 770077/775577); 001 Taxis (+44 0 1865 240000); Radio Taxis (+44 0 1865 242424/249743), and Royal Cars (+44 0 1865 777333).
Now, to get from LHA to your Oxford hotel, you can purchase coach tickets at the travel center at LHA central bus station or book in advance with the operator. Heathrow central bus station is between Terminals 1, 2, and 3. The bus station is open 24 hours a day. Your choices are Oxford Bus (www.oxfordbus.co.uk) and National Express (www.nationalexpress.com/airport). Taxis are plentiful at HLA as well, but be prepared to pay a small fortune for a taxi ride from the airport to Oxford. Best bet -- take the coach (or a taxi) to Paddington Station in London and catch the rail to Oxford. For information on booking, tickets, and schedules call 888-382-RAIL or visit the official Rail Europe website at www.raileurope.com. You can plan your entire trip online.
