Brixton
Edit ThisBrixton is a colourful, unique area, that is like nowhere else in London. Down Electric Avenue (made famous by Eddy Grant's song), it's packed with stalls supplying exotic fruit and vegetables, fish and meat from Africa and the Caribbean. Wander down Atlantic Road to access more indoor markets, and enter 'Brixton Village', and indoor market off Pope's Road, which has household goods, greasy spoons, a pet shop and a specialist wig shop. Brixton is also home to the famous Brixton academy, the grand town hall at the centre of it all and many libraries and historical sites.
Other highlights are Bookmongers, a great second-hand book shop, Traid which is a very fashionable charity shop (the prices reflect this), Morley's is Brixton's large department store, you can stop by the carphone warehouse, sainsburys and boots, the body shop, woolworths, iceland and others, Macdonald's is also located here, there are some second hand clothing and cosmetics stores, the body shop, marks and spencers, a black book and toy store; zawadi, joy the ecletic clothes and goods stores, several pubs, cafes, bars, restaurants and several specialist black music shops down Coldharbour Lane.
If you fancy getting your nails done, or your afro hair styled, there are loads of places on Coldharbour Lane. Many hairdressers seem to open late in the evening, but whether much hairdressing is going on is another matter.
Brixton is a vibrant town but be very careful has one of the highest crime rates in the city especially at night. For the future, cross river tram, bringing you to coldharbour lane and brixton central from the city of london. Don't be deterred this should all happen by 2012 or so.
