Senior Travel in London
Edit ThisLondon is one of the most senior friendly cities in Europe, offering
several discounts on public transport and attractions to visitors over
60. There are museums and theaters with convenient amenities for senior
travelers, along with especially reserved seats on state-run transport.
Here is a guide to help senior visitors make the most of their
trip to one of the more elegant and hip cities on earth.
Transport
Senior visitors can get nice discounts on airfare by taking
advantage of British Airway’s 10% Privileged Traveler Discount Program
and reduced APEX restrictions on cancellations. Visitors from United
States can also benefit from the heavy discounts on BA tours and
intra-Britain airfare, booked from their local agents. BritRail is known
to offer first-class rail passes at modest rates for senior travelers.
Most public-transport discounts in London are offered only to valid
British Pension book holders, but almost all city attractions and
even hotels have generous discounts for senior visitors.
Attractions and Hotels
While booking your hotel, make sure to mention your age and ask for
a senior traveler’s discount. When you check in, ensure that you have
some identification that acts as a proof of age. Before paying for
entry at any of the major attractions, always ask for a discount, even
it hasn’t been mentioned anywhere on a notice. Many times, visitors
have to proactively ask for discounts, so never hesitate.
Sightseeing Ideas
Apart from the conventional and widely reviewed London attractions,
there is a nice and fairly undiscovered Victoria and Albert Museum,
located near the South Kensington tube Station at Cromwell Road. The
center has one of the most exhaustive collections on exquisite Indian
art, as well as Islamic and Chinese masterpieces. There are galleries
full of paintings from Japan and Korea, along with Constable Paintings
like the classic Tate. Witness an enviable collection of Raphael
creations and a range of miniatures and pieces of Renaissance
sculpture. There is also an array of Samurai
swords. Visitors must also visit the Orangery Restaurant housed inside
the Kensington Palace, to enjoy one of the finest brewed proper English
teas!
Activities
London is often synonymous with theater, concerts and enchanting musicals. Grab a schedule and watch concerts at The South Bank Center, The Royal Festival Hall, The Queen Elizabeth Hall, Wigmore Hall and The Royal Albert Hall. If you can manage it, make a trip to the Shakespeare Productions at the Stratford Memorial Theatre, located at about 100 miles north of London. They stage regular productions penned by the literary genius.
London boasts of a classic and timeless elegance that radiates through its grand monarchial legacy, and stately monuments. There are several attractions, activities and discounts to help senior visitors enjoy the hypnotic charm of the ‘prim and prohpah’ Britain.
