Shopping in York

The heart of the modern shopping area beats at Parliament Street. Here, you can find all the big names in the design world and companies such as M & S. The main square, with it’s fountain and many benches, offers a nice place to catch your breath again. Just off the square, you can visit the Newgate Market, where you can buy anything ranging from fruits to antiques.

Best-known are of course the Shambles and Stonegate. The Shambles are a cluster of small winding streets, also better known as the Snickelways, packed with small crafts-shops and other ‘gewgaws’ shops. Stonegate is the famous cobbled street that leads from St Helen’s Square to the Minster. Although the shops have become rather touristy, it remains a nice street (and you’ll have to pass through it anyway, because other wise you won't reach ‘Ye olde Starre Inn’ that is located in the exact middle of the street.)
