Plymouth's naval dockyard made it a prime bombing target in WW2 and it was one of the very first English cities to make its plans for post-war recovery. Initially it was celebrated and visited for this but of course other cities learned from Plymouth's mistakes and the centre is something like a museum of the late forties.

Even so it has much going for it. The Mayflower Steps, where the Pilgrim Fathers last sighted land before heading for America, ensure that it has a lot of visitors from overseas..There is an authentic Elizabethan [the First!] house near the Barbican area and between there and the well known Plymouth Hoe is the Citadel, built in the reign of Charles II, with more guns pointing at the city than out to sea; no prizes for guessing Plymouth's side in the Civil War.

There is a road bridge to Saltash in Cornwall near to the Brunel railway bridge on the main Penzance line making Plymouth a great point of access for the SE Cornwall area as well as for lovely river valleys and the south part of Dartmoor in its own county of Devon
