Dartmoor is a huge granite area of moorland with fascinating outcrops of rock on top of the hills, called Tors. It is worth noting that Burrator is not actually a tor but a reservoir supplying the city of Plymouth which is near to the south edge of the Moor.

Dartmoor is also noted for its plethora of Bronze Age remains; stone circles, stone rows and burial chambers and its clapper bridges. Less happily it is also well known for mists and boggy areas, though stories of the latter are often much exaggerated.

It is an excellent area for walks of practically any length and Youth Hostels are to be found at :
