Eating Out in Coventry
Edit ThisCoventry's food specialties include all of the typical British cuisine. You can find these traditional dishes all over the city, especially in the more touristy restaurants of hotels and shopping areas. Prices of food vary in Coventry, and you'll find that the quality of a dish is not necessarily reflected by its price. Delicious, large portions of food can be found at a very low cost, while sometimes at expensive luxury restaurants, the food is just not up to par with the price, not in quality and not in portion size.
Apart from restaurants serving traditional British foods, there is also a huge variety of eclectic restaurants serving up foods from all over the globe, including Chinese food, Japanese food, Indian food, and Thai food. Vegetarian food isn't too hard to find in Coventry either.
Common British Foods
Roast beef and other roasted meats, such as chicken, pork, and lamb, are extremely common for both lunch and dinner. A typical side dish to all of these meats is Yorkshire Pudding, baked flour, eggs, and milk usually softened with some gravy. Bangers and Mash is a classic meal featuring sausages and mashed potatoes, while the Ploughman's Lunch, served in many bars, is made of minced lamb and vegetables covered with mashed potatoes. Another traditional meal is Gammon Steak with Egg, which is actually a ham steak.
Restaurants
For rich pub grub at a low price, The Shilton Arms is a great choice. Another inexpensive option is The Old Windmill. Here in this medieval pub you'll find meat based pub food as well as plenty of vegetarian meals and snacks. The Cosy Cottage is very nice for families. The place has a warm, comfortable atmosphere, and the chef is talented as well as creative.
For fancier fare, go to one of the many restaurants set in historical locations. The Bear Inn is located in a 16th Century Inn with much history. It's famous for its ales and food quality. Serving traditional British food, the Garden Restaurant is situated in a 12th Century abbey in the heart of 500 acres of parkland. The Eden Bar and Restaurant serves international cuisine in a 300 year old traditional British building with a modern interior.
If you prefer a more exotic dining experience, try Tumeric Gold at Meriden. This eccentric restaurant is set in a refurbished Georgian building with vibrantly colored decorations and furnishings inside. The food is spicey, authentic, and high quality.
