Senior Travel in Nikolaev

Edit This

Nikolaev senior travel offers a variety of sights and activities for seniors of all interests. Whether you're extremely active or you face some mobility issues, you're likely to enjoy any of the following activities:

Nikolaev Museum of Shipbuilding and Fleet

The city of Nikolaev has its roots in shipbuilding. Situated along two rivers and the Black Sea, Nikolaev was chosen as a port where workers have toiled to build ships for hundreds of years. The city was founded only after the contemporary Russian Governor General established the port town as a shipbuilding yard in 1789. Today, three shipyards still exist and the city continues to thrive on the shipbuilding industry.

If you're head to Nikolaev, you should take a tour through the Nikolaev Museum of Shipbuilding and Fleet, which was established in 1978. There are 12 halls, each of which showcases dioramas at different stages of the shipbuilding process through multiple epochs, dating back to ancient times. The wide spaces in this museum make it ideal for wheelchair and cane access. Expect to do quite a bit of walking and standing, though, if you're not using assistance.

Spend Time on Sovetskya Street

Sovestskya Street is the main street in Nikolaev and it's attractively framed on both sides with lines of trees. You can stroll along the lane at your own pace looking at the trees and stopping at numerous shops that line the avenue. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants for resting your feet and grabbing a drink or bite to eat. Sovetskya Street is also where most of Nikolaev's casinos are. These are upscale gambling establishments that are popular with locals and tourists alike.

Nikolaev Zoo

Although there are bound to be many other tourists and families at the zoo, senior travelers shouldn't pass up the most popular zoo in Ukraine because they think they're too "old" to enjoy it. There are more than 2,500 different animals at this zoo from 350 different species. The natural habitats in which the animals live during the warmer months are attractive and make for a pleasant place to stroll one morning or afternoon. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants at the zoo and there's also an indoor Zoo Museum if you need to take a break from the sun. Best of all, adult admission is only about the equivalent of US$4!

Tip: If you want to avoid crowds, visit the zoo in the off season, such as early spring or late fall. However, although winter is the season during which the zoo is the least crowded, all of the animals are indoors in boring concrete habitats, so avoid winter visits if possible.
