Museums in Nikolaev
Edit ThisThe Ukranian city of Nikolaev, also known as Mykolayiv in Ukranian,
has several museums of interest to travelers. The museums highlight the
city's historical and cultural significance.
Established
in the late 1970's, the museum showcases the history of Nikolaev and
its importance to the shipbuilding industry and as a naval base. In
addition to its citizens building ships, Nikolaev also served as the
headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Naval Fleet. The museum displays
several replica ships. The city remains critical to the shipbuilding
industry.
The Nikolaev Fine Arts Museum is named after 19th century Russian
battle painter, Vasily Vasilyevich Vereshchagin. The collection dates
back to ancient times and spans the modern era.
Founded in the early 1910's, the Local History Museum showcases Nikolaev's history and culture. The collection consists of over 160,000 items. Tours of the museum are available in Russian.
Museum of “Partisan Movement"A companion museum to the Local History Museum, this museum is dedicated to the region's "Partisan Movement" during the years of 1941 to 1944. Nikolaev was occupied by the Nazis for approximately 3 years during the war. The museum focuses on the role Nikolaev played during the war and the impact of the war on the city. The museum was opened in 1975 in the Nikolaev city center.
