Getting Around in Nikolaev
Edit ThisTrain Travel
Short-distance commuter trains, or 'elektrichki', move extensively throughout the Ukraine and are one of the more reliable ways to get around. Passports are no longer required to purchase tickets. The 2 major train hubs in Nikolaev are the Nikolaev Passenger Station and the Nikolaev Gruzovoy Station. In Ukraine, trains have 2 restrooms in each carriage (one on either end), and smoking is permitted in designated, isolated compartments. Longer-distance trains often have compartments with bunks on which to sleep. With those trains, a more expensive ticket will give you a private, locking compartment, but cheaper tickets give you open compartments that allow the chance to socialize with other passengers. As such, the locking compartments are generally safer for those who have valuables they would like to keep safe.
Bus Travel
Buses in Ukraine are less comfortable than trains, particularly the older buses, which are often dirty and can become overcrowded during rush hours. But bus travel is often more economical for short distances, and travelers do have the option of more comfortable bus rides with private companies like Sherif Tur, Autolux, and Gunsel.
Taxi Travel
Ukrainian taxi services are willing to transport passengers extensively throughout cities and even between them. Travelers can often arrange for taxis to transfer them to or from airports. Taxi services are more private than public transportation, and often more comfortable and reliable. Many charge by the hour but have special rates for full-day packages, or for a certain number of hours.
