Nikolaev Children's Town Fairy Tale

In the middle of Nikolaev is a children's delight--that's completely free to visit. (Some games may cost a little to play.) The popular park in the heart of Nikolaev is Children's Town Fairy Tale, where kids can explore and play a miniature amusement park made to look like something out of a European fairy tale. There's a miniature castle, pirate ship and an imitation train t o play in. Games and activities include a house of mirrors, swings, trampolines, children's cars and a merry-go-round. After the kids have had their fun, take the whole family to the nearby Fairy Tale Cafe, where you can feed the entire family on a budget with basic casual dining options.

Visit the Nikolaev Zoo

While children may be the most likely to enjoy the most popular zoo in Ukraine, even adults and seniors delight in seeing the over 2,500 animals (350 different species) at the Nikolaev Zoo. Best of all, admission is the equivalent of about US$4 for adults and US$2 for children, making a day at the zoo a must-see part of Nikolaev budget travel. You can tour the Zoo Museum, have lunch at a cafe and enjoy the sights and sounds of the wild.

Tip: Try to visit the zoo during the spring or summer. (The summer will be more crowded, though.) During the late fall and winter, the animals are kept inside to protect them from the harsh climate. While you can still tour the indoor facilities, it's more exciting to see the animals outside in a natural environment than an indoor, artificial one. The indoor tour has a more unpleasant smell, as well.
