The former apartment of this world-famous physicist is located in number 49 of a very cozy, old street called Klangasse. At one time he was a patent office clerk in Switzerland working and developing his ideas while living in this apartment until in 1905, he finally got his “Special Theory of Relativity” published. He was only 26 at the time. Check out the bar and restaurant below the apartment. This historic site is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. and Saturdays from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. Be aware that during the months of December and January, the apartment is closed to the public.
2. Zentrum Paul Klee
This larger than life modern masterpiece of a building was designed by architect, Renzo Piano. He created a structure that would blend with the natural environment instead of contrasting with it. It houses a fantastic collection of modern art which is exhibited temporarily in rotations. A ticket for one exhibition costs CHF 18, while two exhibitions cost CHF 22. If you plan to attend an event at the museum, you can add an exhibition onto the event ticket price for only CHF 6.
Kids and adults alike will enjoy the Kindermuseum Creaviva where you can build your own mosaic, design your own postcard, make oriental jewels, create sand images, and much more. A ticket is CHF 15 for this open art session.
3. Bundehaus
Don’t forget to visit this important governmental building created in an Italian Renaissance style. Bundehaus is the Federal Palace of Switzerland and home to 2 of the Swiss Parliament Federal Assemblies. You can take guided tours there and even pass through the debating chambers. Just make sure to bring your passport to enter. Tours are offered every day of the week. A tranquil area with lovely views, Bundesterrasse, is located behind Bundehaus.
4. Barenplatz
If you want to visit a lively area of town, check out the large, spacious promenade, Barenplatz. It is basically a place for meeting people, talking, walking, and eating. There are plenty of tiny, street-side cafes to choose from. Overall, its just a great area to relax and enjoy.
5. Cathedral Munster
Built in the 15th and 16th centuries, this ornate cathedral has some spectacular carvings and stained glass. The famous stone depiction of the Last Judgment is located above the large door and seems to be meant to scare its observers into faith. Its gargoyles and remarkable stained glass give it a distinctively gothic feel.
