Eating Out in Bern

Edit This
Dining out in Bern can be expensive and, in some cases, disappointing.  Spending a lot of money does not necessarily get you the best food in town.  Get recommendations (or read on) before you plunk down your hard-earned cash, and report back here if you find a place you like.

Meet Point

Edit This

Offering:  Turkish/Mediterranean fast-food.

Kabobs, kebabs, kebaps, gyros, shawarmas, or tacos al pastor; whatever you call them, this place makes great ones.  Shaved meat is piled on a flour tortilla or soft roll (like a hamburger bun) and topped with lettuce, onion, and tomato; a choice of sauces--yogurt sauce or a ketchup/mayonnaise mixture; and a sprinkle of dried hot peppers.  Any of the above can be left off if you wish, and this can be accomplished reasonably well by pointing and shaking your head if you and the server don't have a language in more..

Restaurant Le Mazot

Offering:  Traditional Swiss specialties.  Recommended for Rosti (a Swiss dish like American hash browns with toppings, served in an iron skillet) and a variety of Fondues.

Atmosphere:  Dark, cozy, sometimes very smoky interior; "garden room" in front is open-air when the weather is nice and has a heavy awning, movable glass walls, and heaters which allow it to be used year-round.

Money:  Expect to pay around 15CHF (€9, $12.50) for Rosti and 25CHF (€15, $20) for Fondue.  House Specialties run around 30CHF (€18, $25).  Soups, more..

Imperial China Mongolian Barbecue

Edit This

Offering: Mongolian barbecue, for those of you who may be unfamiliar with it, is a self-serve buffet of raw ingredients from which the diner selects his own delectable combination which is then cooked while he waits.  The meat choices at Imperial China include beef, chicken, pork, lamb, fish, and shrimp.  Sliced vegetables, onions, and white mushrooms, sprouts, canned pineapple, and other non-meat items round out the selection.
