Day Trips in Gothenburg
Edit ThisPlanning Gothenburg day trips is one way to enhance your trip to Sweden's second largest city. There are plenty of exciting cities in Sweden that you can visit in a day from Gothenburg, such as the following:
Jonkoping, Smaland
One of the greatest benefits of taking a day trip to Jonkoping is that Jonkoping is still within the top ten most populated cities in Sweden, but as it ranks in at number nine, it's not large enough to overwhelm. You'll be assured plenty to do and still get a bit of that Old World, classic European feel.
If you want to spend a day in Jonkoping, you can drive the 90 miles east in about two to three hours. However, it may be easier to hitch a ride on a train from Gothenburg to Jonkoping that will get you there in just under two hours for only about US$21 each way. While in Jonkoping, you may decide to partake in a fair or exhibition held at Elmia, a huge exhibition center that hosts industries ranging from computer programing to forestry to railways.
Two major museums might spark your interest. The first, the Jonkoping County Museum, offers a glance at the city's history and features artifiacts as many as 10,000 years old as well as 17th century Swedish art. The other is the Match Museum, which offers a comprehensive look at the history of the city's Match Factory, the Tandstickfabriken, which was built in 1844. If you hope to go shopping, you can visit either Smedjegatan, which has a fine selection of mom and pop stores, or Ostra Storgatan, which has a number of international brand names.
