To know the historical antecedents of Altea it would be necessary to look for them in the Iberian culture, in the findings that rest in the territory and have been discovered, just as some from the Roman time, of which today are left small tracks like the remains of an aqueduct that is known with the name of "Els Arcs".

During the Muslim domination, it belonged to the Taifa de Denia, and was conquered by Jaime I in 1244. The alteanos wich left their primitive located establishment that is today known by the the bame of Old Altea, and sought refuge and protection in the tower-castle, were transferred to their present location looking for that rose at the top of the hill. The town was walled, and parts of these defenses conserve themselves even today, specially in two front doors that give access to the urban nucleus which grew and extended to outside the wall, being created the marine district of "Rabal of the Sea", today one of most typical districts to be visited.

Altea still conserves today its old town, that offers to the visitor a suggestive space to take a walk by the narrow and crooked streets that, in continuous ascent, will take to us until the ample square that extends next to the parochial church, from which we can contemplate beautiful coastal landscapes the interior of the region.

Old refuge of artists who looked for the tranquillity and the uneasiness of this beautiful villa, Altea has been always surrounded by that cultural pull ahead that gave at it's moment the presence of great artists, circumstance that gave origin to the creation of many bars that at the same time were galleries of art and small factories. Workshops of ceramics, imitation jewellery and French wood stature who the tourist boom became English pubs, Italian restaurants, pizzerías and gave it a mixture of the internationality that even surrounds the atmosphere of this city.

Exerting a constant presence, the church of Altea, constructed at the beginning of last century, it is dedicated to the Mother of God of Consuelo. The dome, of levantino style in crystal ceramics of colors blue and white, is very famous and most emblematic of the coast.
