Vigo Travel Guide
Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and seeVigo is a classical city. It has a population of some 300,000 residents and is packed full of wonderful architecture, including Romanesque and Gothic structures. The city is coastal, being located on the Ria de Vigo inlet - one of four making up the Rias Baixas.
The beaches around Vigo are very popular with tourists and residents alike. Most are small and sandy, truncated in places by spectacular rock formations that plunge into the sea. The view from many of the beaches takes in Cies Island - a breathtaking island surrounded by pure white sandy beaches and home to one of Europe's most important nature reserves.
Located on Spain's western coast just north of Portugal, the border city Vigo and the outlying area are home to some of Spain’s most beautiful scenery. For centuries, the fishing industry fueled the city’s economy; however, recent oil spills have limited the amount of sea life present along the western Iberian coast, consequently forcing the people to find other work.
In addition to the Spanish language, natives of Vigo speak Galician, a language which originated centuries ago and that later morphed into Portuguese in Portugal.
