The Cathedral, Zamora

The Cathedral, Zamora

There are buses throughout the day that reach Zamora in about an hour. This was known as 'The Closed One' in mediaeval times because it is high on a hill and could be completely fortified. It is historically one of the great cities and does not deserve to be downgraded now. Whereas Salamanca is one of the grandest cities in Spain, zamora is more delicate and earns the adjective 'graceful.'

The cathedral is a most impressive building, particularly the exterior and the old city seems to teem with beautiful Romanesque churches. There is one very plain one outside the walls where El Cid is said to have worshipped. Some of the streets around the delightful plaza mayor [though it is considerably less grand than that of Salamanca] have attractive Art Nouveau shops.

For those interested there is a bus several times a week into Portugal.
