Salvador Vilaseca Regional Museum
Best known for its fine arts displays, this museum is located in the town of Reus, about 12 km from Salou. Visitors to this museum can see exhibits right from prehistoric times to the current day. Some of the most interesting displays here include Gothic panels, Baroque religious statues, 16th and 17th century ceramics and archaeological remains from Roman and prehistoric periods. The museum is closed on Mondays and certain days in the year. Admission timings also vary according to the time of year, so tourists should ensure that the museum is open before leaving.
Tarragona Archaeological Museum
This is the oldest museum of its kind in Catalonia. The Tarragona Archaeological Museum is located approximately 10 km from the town of Salou and is a must visit attraction. A unique feature of this museum is that it has several exposition salons which display different remains from periods. Some of the displays to look out for are antique remains from the Romanization period and Tarraco. Another worthy attraction in the museum is the Medusa mosaic. The Tarragona Archaeological Museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Diocesan Museum
Tourists who admire ancient arts should visit the Diocesan Museum in Tarragona which is currently being housed in the previous Bishop’s Palace. Located just behind the Cathedral, this is an ideal museum for art works and paintings. Visitors will find a lot of interesting displays like pottery from the 14th to 18th century. There is also a collection of prayer books, paintings, pulpits, ceramics and Arab tapestries. One of the main displays visitors should look out for is St. George slaying a dragon that is set against a medieval Palma background.
