Budget Travel Ideas in Barcelona
Edit ThisWhile it’s possible to spend a small fortune on a vacation in Barcelona, this lively city also has plenty to offer the budget traveler. There are accommodation and eating options to suit all pockets and with a few smart choices, you can have a blast.
Go Self-Catering
It’s possible to save a fortune on your stay in Barcelona if you decide to go down the self-catering route. While there are a number of good backpacker options in the city, the best bet for those looking for their own space is to rent an apartment. There are several companies offering very good, and centrally located apartments at reasonable prices. With kitchen facilities you’ll save a bundle on eating out, and self-catered apartments tend to be a good deal cheaper than hotel accommodation. There are some great value apartments located on and around Lass Ramblas at http://www.apartmentsramblas.com.
Hit the Beach
While the most scenic beaches are to be found a train ride away from Barcelona City Center, the city’s own beach are still a pleasant place to top up your tan without spending a cent on transport. It’s possible to walk down to the city beach from most centrally-located hotels, hostels and apartments. Bring along a bottle of icy cold water, stock up on snacks at a supermarket, and prepare to bronze.
Sightsee on Foot
Barcelona’s vast size means that it can be tempting to take the metro and/or taxis everywhere you want to go, but if you have the time and the energy, touring the city on foot is a great way to take in the many sites on offer. Put on cool and comfortable clothes and shoes, and take a stroll up Las Ramblas, stopping for street snacks if you need to refuel. There are many wonderfully-ornate buildings to be spotted throughout, Barca, as it is affectionately known, so keep your camera ready. Look out for those designed by the legendary surrealist architect Guadi, and note that, should you not have the cash to pay the entrance fee at his masterwork cathedral Sagrada Familia, the outside of the building alone is a sight to behold and costs absolutely nothing to view.
Be Your Own Bartender
Barcelona’s nightlife is legendary, but many of the city’s nightclubs are also extremely expensive. Once you’ve paid your entrance fee you may find yourself facing shockingly steep prices at the bar, so it’s well worth stocking up on Sangria or your tipple of choice at any supermarket, and getting in the party spirit with a few drinks at the apartment before heading out. As many apartments are equipped with balconies, this can be a very pleasant way to start an evening while spending very little.
