Festivals in San Sebastian
Edit This
The international film festival of San Sebastian
is Spain’s premiere film festival. It is often hailed as Europe’s
finest after Cannes and Venice. The claim that its foundation of
artistic merit, of valuing independent cinema and unique stories told
in an exceptional way, from all over the world is not a new one. But it
certainly seems to hold itself up to these standards. The films
screened here are not mainstream and the content could oftentimes be
difficult (and thus, worthwhile) to see. Lasting ten days, the festival
usually consists of many events: several world premieres, short films
from as yet unknown directors, and awards for performance, direction,
cinematography, and screenplay, among others. Definitely an inspiring
event for lovers of cinema.
The Donostia Award, a lifetime achievement award, is presented each year to actors that have carved their own niche in film history; that did not toe the line with traditional Hollywood products. Past recipients of this award include Anjelica Huston, Willem Defoe, Ben Gazzarra, Annette Bening, and Jeff Bridges.
Many of the festival's main events take place in the Kursaal Building, pictured above.
